Disney’s grip on live-action remakes has faced recent challenges, with titles like Mufasa and Snow White falling short. Into this evolving landscape steps Universal, Disney’s chief competitor, with its live-action How to Train Your Dragon. While the very necessity of this remake is debatable, its unwavering commitment to the 2010 animated classic nonetheless makes for an engaging watch.
Dean DeBlois, the visionary behind the original animated film, has opted for a near shot-for-shot recreation, akin to Funny Games U.S. The live-action Dragon retains virtually all of its animated predecessor’s DNA, with subtle dialogue tweaks and visual upgrades being the primary concessions to the intervening 15 years. Consequently, prior viewers of the animated film will find little new here; changes are predominantly cosmetic and driven by the medium switch. Interestingly, some of the animated humor, particularly from supporting characters, loses its distinctive charm without the exaggerated expressions unique to cartoons.
