Ballerina 2025 Movie Review
Ballerina is a pure joy, a thrilling, woman-led action spectacle that echoes the spirit of Charlie’s Angels and Kill Bill while forging its own unique, surreal path. As a spin-off set in the John Wick universe, it’s an added bonus, but the film’s true heart lies in the fierce strength of its protagonist, Eve Macarro (played by Ana de Armas). We were completely engrossed by her relentless fury.
The story kicks off when Eve, as a child, witnesses her father’s murder by an assassin cult he once served. After surviving the attack, she’s taken under the wing of Winston Scott (Ian McShane), manager of the New York Continental Hotel, and trained at the Ruska Roma—a ballet theater that secretly functions as an assassin academy. Years later, a highly skilled and formidable killer, Eve’s journey leads her back to the cult responsible for her father’s death. Her quest for vengeance culminates in the deadly village of Hallstatt, where every resident is a bloodthirsty cult member, as she targets the cult’s chancellor (Gabriel Byrne).
Ana de Armas is phenomenal, proving she’s a powerhouse actress far beyond her glamorous looks. She grounds Ballerina with a commanding presence, dominating the action sequences, especially the jaw-dropping climax featuring a fire gun. Her emotional depth shines through in vulnerable, heart-wrenching moments, allowing her to fully embody Eve’s pain and resolve. This is undeniably her film.
Keanu Reeves delivers that quintessential John Wick vibe, sparking cheers with every appearance. Ian McShane, Gabriel Byrne, and Anjelica Huston also make strong impressions in their supporting roles. However, characters played by Norman Reedus, Catalina Sandino Moreno, and the late Lance Reddick could have benefited from more screen time and sharper writing to truly match the film’s high energy.
