We Were Liars 2025 Tv Show Review
The illusion of perfection lies at the heart of We Were Liars, Prime Video’s latest YA psychological thriller. Adapted from E. Lockhart’s award-winning novel by Julie Plec and Carina Adly McKenzie, the series follows Cadence Sinclair Eastman (Emily Alyn Lind), a teenager grappling with memory loss after a traumatic brain injury. As she struggles to recall the events of the fateful summer when she turned 16—known as Summer 16—Cadence finds herself haunted by unanswered questions. With her family refusing to reveal the truth, she takes it upon herself to trigger memories and uncover what really happened. Twisted, intricate, and emotionally charged, We Were Liars explores themes of privilege, family dysfunction, and the cost of buried secrets. While the final episodes lose some narrative punch, the overall journey is undeniably gripping.
The story begins with a jarring image: Cadence lies unconscious and barely clothed on the shore near her family’s sprawling estate on Beechwood Island, a private retreat near Martha’s Vineyard. As she narrates, Cadence introduces the key players—her cousins Johnny (Joseph Zada, soon to appear as young Haymitch Abernathy in Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping), Mirren (Esther McGregor), and her close friend—and burgeoning love interest—Gat (Shubham Maheshwari). Together, they form a tight-knit group called the “Liars,” spending each summer on the island since the age of eight.
Beechwood is owned by Cadence’s wealthy grandparents, Harris (David Morse) and Tipper (Wendy Crewson), and hosts a rotating cast of family members every summer. Among them are Cadence’s mother Penny (Caitlin FitzGerald), aunts Carrie (Mamie Gummer) and Bess (Candice King), as well as Carrie’s partner Ed (Rahul Kohli), who also happens to be Gat’s uncle. Though Cadence is an only child, Johnny and Mirren have younger siblings collectively dubbed the “Littles.”
As the narrative moves forward to Summer 17, Cadence begins to piece together fragments of Summer 16—the summer that fractured everything. Family tensions were simmering, secrets were tightly held, and a romance between Cadence and Gat was blossoming. But as she delves deeper into her past, it becomes clear that the truth is far more unsettling than she imagined—and her own identity may not be what she believed.
